Born in a family rich in
musical tradition, Ravindra's musical instincts asserted early. His
father Late Pt. Prabhakar Chari, a noted tabla player from Goa
initiated his musical training in Harmonium, Tabla and Sitar.
He continued to nurture his child's potential and zeal for sitar
placing him under the tutelage of Ustad Abdul Karim Khan.
He learnt Harmonium from Pt. Tulshidas Borkar.
Later Ravi moved to Mumbai where he studied under great sitar
maestros like Pt. Pushparaj Koshti, Ustad Abdul Halim Jaffer Khan
and Ustad Shahid Parvez,which continues till today
Highly acclaimed by critics and connoisseurs alike for his excellent
command over laya and layakari, his sitar recitals are crowned by an
exposition that is melodious and rich at times even complex. He has
performed with great Indian musicians including Ustad Allah Rakha, Kishori Amonkar,
Mrudangam wizard Umalayapuram Shivaraman, Ustad Sultan khan, Pt.
Suresh Talwalkar,Trilok Gurtu,Louiz Banks, Sivamani, Ranjit Barot,
Fazal Quereshi, Shama Bhate, Amit Heri, Merlin D'Souza,Taufiq Quereshi etc. on
various projects. At present teaching at Sharda Sangeet Vidhyalaya,
Bandra-Mumbai.
His innate creative talent and enthusiasm for innovation has led him
to perform with internationally acclaimed artistes from diverse
musical cultures viz. Salif Keita, Trilok Gurtu, Kai Eckhart,
Angelique Kidjo, Pacco Sairre, Kudsi Eulgner, Robert Miles at major
music festivals like WOMAD, Glastonbery, Bumbershoot Festival etc.
Recently performed for the Grammy nominated album from world renowned Miles Davis, by the name “Miles from India”, including the ensemble of the following musicians,
Louiz Banks (piano/Fender Rhodes), Wallace Roney (trumpet), Ravi Chary (sitar), Jimmy Cobb (drums), Vikku Vinayakram (ghatam), Chick Corea (piano), John McLaughlin (guitar), U. Shrinivas
(mandolin) & many more..
Lending his music a unique eclectic approach while resting firmly on
the rich classical tradition.
His performance in several innovative albums viz. Miles Davis From
India, The Glimpse, African Fantasy, Beat of Love, Broken Rhythm
etc. bear ample testimony to his sincere creative skill.
Recipient of fellowship from HRD, Government of India and
prestigious Surmani award, Ravindra's recitals have been broadcast
on radio and television. He was also a lecturer in Music at Mumbai
University.
He has acquired the rare combination of mastering Harmonium and
Sitar. His students have won many prizes due to his unique style of
playing and teaching.
A highly sought after performing artiste, both as a soloist and in
collaboration with artistes from diverse musical backgrounds, Ravi
has traveled extensively in India as well as UK, Germany, Italy,
Spain, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Austria, Holland, Greece,
Singapore, Belgium, France, Yugoslavia, USA, Canada, Luxemburg,
Ireland, Hungary, South Africa, Poland, Norway, Australia, Brazil,
Dubai, New Calidonea and New Zealand.
Rendered his musical skills at the very prestigious Vasantotsav 2010 at Pune, alongwith stalwarts like Trilok Gurtu, Mahesh Kale, Rahul Deshpande, Dhruv Ghanekar and others.
Performed at Teen Prahar music festival at Chowdiah Auditorium, Bangalore with Rakesh Chaurasiya, Giridhar Udupa & Kalinath Mishra.
